Many new homes were constructed between 1995 and the mid 2000s following the opening of the Virginia Railway Express lines from Stafford and Prince William Counties straight into Washington, D.C.
The eastern route relieves commuters of the need to travel the "dreaded" Route 95 into Washington, DC or to the Pentagon. Convenient stations along the way inlude Fredericksburg, Leeland Road, Brooke, Quantico, Rippon, Woodbridge, Lorton, Franconia/Franconia, Alexandria, Crystal City, L'Enfant and terminates at Union Station. Stations from Franconia to Union Station are transfer points to METRO.
The western route offers a quiet commute from the Manassas area and saves commuters the daily "gridlock" on Route 66. Stations along the Manassas route include Broad Run/Airport, Manassas, Manassas Park, Burke Centre, Rolling Road, Backlick Road, Alexandria, Crystal City, L'Enfant and Union Station. Connections to METRO are from Alexandria to Union Station.
The Virginia Railway Express, VRE, operates Monday through Friday with heavier schedules bound north in the mornings and bound south in the evening. The Fredericksburg line parallels Route 95. The Manassas line parallels Route 66.
The VRE does not offer service on weekends or Federal holidays. .
The trip from Fredericksburg to L'Enfant Plaza is about 70 minutes. The same trip driving Route 95 is up to 2 hours depending on traffic.
The trip from Manassas to L'Enfant Plaza is about 65 minutes. The same trip driving Route 66 is about 90 minutes depending on traffic.
